The coach stops at the castle door. Jonathan can go in to do the business, or ask the driver to take him back down that night.

Jonathan is received at the castle; the Count opens the door himself. After it closes behind him, he finds there are no servants, and no way out. The imprisonment in the original begins at this threshold.
