Pride and Prejudice · Chapter 34
Darcy's Proposal
Hunsford parsonage, Kent · Soon after Charlotte's marriage
A spring afternoon at the Hunsford parsonage. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth, love tangled with a superiority he cannot keep down.
Darcy arrives uninvited. He loves her, he says, in spite of every obstacle to the match. Elizabeth thinks of Bingley's coldness to Jane and of Wickham's charges, and refuses him at once. Darcy is astonished, then angry, and leaves. In the original this is the hour their prejudices are spoken aloud, not a reconciliation.
