The Count of Monte Cristo · Chapter 20

The Château d'If

A dungeon in the Château d'If · After Faria's death

Faria is dead. The jailers will come for the body. Dantès can take the shroud, or let the abbé be thrown into the sea alone.

After the abbé dies, Dantès sews himself into the shroud, is thrown into the sea, cuts the sack, and swims. The Count of Monte Cristo in the original begins with this false death.
